Significance Of Father's Day

It is said that one spark can start a fire, and what a fine spark it was that prompted a woman in Spokane, Washington to light up a fire that gave the world an open tryst with a revolution named Father's Day. Before this spark, it was all about mothers; a father's effort weren't unanimously acknowledged as they are now. The woman was Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father William Jackson Smart ,single-handedly raised a family of six children, including a new born, when their mother passed away during childbirth. Over the years, Sonora watched her father dedicatedly take care of her and her other five siblings. She was convinced and well aware of her father's selflessness and love with which he took care of his family. And once, while listening to a Mother's Day sermon, the spark ignited and made her want to dedicate a day to her father.

Though the flames of the fire that started from the spark went a little low for a while, with Sonora struggling to get things into place, help from the local ministry of which she was a part and the Young Men's Christian Association's (YMCA) support the first Father's Day was celebrated on 19 June 1910. From thereon, the day started to be celebrated annually in the state of Washington and many other states joined in as well. However, it was in the year 1972 that the permanent Father's Day was officially signed on by President Richard Nixon. Though there remained an initial hesitation in celebrating Father's Day and the ideas was met with mockery at first, soon the day was widely accepted and started being widely celebrated. Over the years, the celebration of Father's Day crossed geographical boundaries and began to be celebrated in many other countries as well, though on different dates.

Today, on every Father's Day, millions across the world honor their dads and fatherly figures who have been there through thick and thin. The day is important because it makes for one fabulous opportunity to acknowledge and express gratitude to the dads who have relentlessly worked hard in providing for their children. But most important thing of all, it will help bridge the emotional gap, if any, between the children and their dads and will bring both closer to each other. Along with verbally paying the tribute, there is also a trend by which children express their feelings by way of gifts, poems, and songs. Though the purists believe that this is killing the spirit of Father's Day, the fact remains that the sentiment behind it goes a long way in strengthening the father-child bond. This was, in a nutshell, the significance of Father's Day. Don't let the opportunity slip out of your hand and grab hold of it this Father's Day by personally recognizing the vital role he has played and still is playing in your life, in where you stand today.
